
Dr. Mark Smeltzer
Mark S. Smeltzer, PhD received his PhD from Kansas State University (microbiology, pathology). His postdoctoral training (pathobiology) focused on the pathogenesis of S. aureus infection. Dr. Smeltzer is a Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He serves as the director for the NIH COBRE Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Inflammatory Responses. He has been had 13 NIH grants (PI on five R01s). Dr. Smeltzer was named a Distinguished Lecturer by the American Society for Microbiology and recognized by UAMS as the Deans’ Distinguished Faculty Scholar and Graduate Faculty of the Year. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters, and obtained four patents. His expertise in infectious diseases, grants, and mentoring junior scientists is critical to Mississippi INBRE.
