Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

Applications are now being accepted for PUI/ERI-based Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF). These fellowships are open to faculty to mentor and support undergraduate students from all biomedical and public health disciplines within their institution.

Your chosen SURF students work with you as their faculty mentor on research and creative projects. Students are required to present a poster at the Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Eligible faculty: Biomedical and Public Health faculty not currently funded through a Mississippi INBRE research project at Mississippi’s PUIs/ERIs.

Program duration: June 1 – July 31, 2026 (9 weeks)

Budget information: Faculty receive one month of summer salary and fringe benefits per SURF (maximum of 2 SURFs per faculty member), student salary ($6,000/SURF) and fringe benefits, supply monies, poster printing costs, travel monies for mentor and SURFs to attend Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference, applicable institutional indirect costs.

Application materials: 2-page Research Plan describing the project in which the student/s will be engaged, Budget, Budget Justification, and AOR approval letter.
