The Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is pleased to announce Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2023, featuring Mississippi Health Disparities, will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the Thad Cochran Center on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg, Mississippi campus.
Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2023, featuring Mississippi Health Disparities, will offer concurrent oral sessions on individual STEM and health disparities tracks, student competitions and an exhibitor pavilion. STEM research faculty, undergraduate & graduate students, healthcare professionals, engineers and public health leaders will unite with the common goal to strengthen STEM infrastructure and address health disparities in Mississippi. In addition, Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2023 provides a stimulating opportunity for Mississippi college students who are pursuing careers in health-related fields.

STEM
The state of Mississippi continues to develop in the area of STEM. In alignment with this, presenters in the areas of cell biology, physiology, immunology, bioengineering, biochemistry, chemistry and materials from academic institutions across Mississippi will share the findings of their cutting-edge research. In addition, research updates from leading professionals in the Center for Emergent Optoelectronics (CEMOs) will provide the community with knowledge on how our highly qualified team is tackling the contemporary challenges in optoelectronic materials research.
Mississippi Health Disparities 2023
Mississippi Health Disparities 2023 (MHD2023) will showcase work that addresses key health issues in the state of Mississippi and across the Gulf South. This symposium aims to illustrate solutions-oriented research and community-academic partnerships that address priority health issues in Mississippi and neighboring communities. MHD2023 will engage a diverse group of health-related researchers and practitioners, and disseminate research that elucidates innovations in the areas of community engagement, social determinants of health, structural interventions and biases/discrimination at multiple levels of influence. We will discuss and collaborate on the following topic areas:

- Environmental Health and Climate Change
- Diabetes, Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease
- Mental Health
- Maternal Health
- Tobacco, Alcohol and Substance Use/Abuse

The Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is a network of colleges and universities designed to build a biomedical research infrastructure in Mississippi. Our mission is to reach out to Mississippians in order to improve health throughout the state and to engage talented researchers and students in biomedical research projects that will increase the state’s research competitiveness as well as impact the health of the citizens of Mississippi.
Center for Emergent Molecular Optoelectronics
Vision: The vision of the Center for Emergent Molecular Optoelectronics (CEMOs) is to position Mississippi as an emerging leader in the rapidly advancing field of optoelectronic materials research, impacting sectors such as energy, photonics, and biomedical technology, through sustained interdisciplinary research and education initiatives that enhance the STEM workforce and stimulate the state’s economy.
Mission: The mission of the project is to establish a sustainable statewide interdisciplinary research infrastructure that will enable Mississippi to address fundamental challenges associated with advanced materials, increase the state’s competitiveness in optoelectronics research, and drive cross-fertilization of research, education, training, and entrepreneurship to build the STEM workforce.
Mississippi Health Disparities
Mississippi Health Disparities (MHD) is an annual health disparities symposium hosted by Mississippi INBRE. MHD was founded in 2021. Our mission is to eliminate health disparities in Mississippi and create healthier, more equitable communities. MHD is the premiere symposium for health professionals across the state to meet and share knowledge on a variety of topics concerning health disparities.
